IRIS-2026 in Cyprus: what to know before a flight
From 12 to 15 October 2026, the National Guard of Cyprus is conducting the IRIS-2026 military exercise around the Kalo Chorio firing range near Larnaca. Live ammunition is being used during the exercise, and access to the range is prohibited on the announced dates.
At the same time, the Cyprus Department of Civil Aviation is reporting scheduled training activity in designated Low Flying and Mountain Flying areas during October, including 15 October. This does not mean that all Cypriot airspace is closed. Particular areas, altitudes or routes may, however, be temporarily unavailable.
How the training areas are used
Low Flying Areas support training at lower altitudes, while Mountain Flying Areas are used for flying and crew training in mountainous terrain. Their status can change according to the training schedule and the operational situation.
Passengers do not need to interpret aviation bulletins themselves. The operator and flight crew complete the necessary checks before departure. Flight times or routes may still be adjusted when the actual airspace situation requires it.
Planning a local VFR flight
Pilots planning local VFR flights over Cyprus should check current NOTAMs, official aviation bulletins and the status of any relevant training areas immediately before departure. Published exercise dates alone are not sufficient: the availability of a route depends on current aeronautical information and air traffic control instructions.
AG Flights monitors official information and takes applicable restrictions into account when planning. Safety remains the priority, so even a short scenic or training flight proceeds only after the route, weather and current airspace status have been checked.
