Is a PPL(A) the right first step?

A private pilot licence is for people who want to build real flying skills, not just take a passenger flight. It can open a path to personal flying and provide a foundation for further aviation study; additional qualifications have their own requirements.

  • Take the controls yourself after structured instruction and assessment.
  • Work towards flying for personal, non-commercial purposes.
  • Explore an eventual aviation career without treating PPL(A) as a professional licence.
  • Pursue an EASA private pilot licence through training in Cyprus.
  • Compare Cyprus with training opportunities in other countries before choosing a school.

Your route from enquiry to licence application

The sequence is a guide, not a promise of a fixed completion date. Theory and flying can partly overlap; the training provider and aviation authorities confirm the applicable requirements.

  1. Consultation

Discuss your goals, preferred location and eligibility with AG Flights before selecting a provider.

  2. Ground school

Complete the hybrid theory programme and prepare for nine subject exams.

  3. Class 2 medical

Obtain the required certificate before any solo flight.

  4. Instructor flights

Build core handling, navigation, landing and emergency-procedure skills.

  5. Solo flights

Progress to supervised programme-approved solo flying once the requirements are met.

  6. Theory exams

Sit the external examinations after meeting the mock-test threshold.

  7. Skill test

After meeting the training requirements, take the practical test with an authorised examiner.

  8. Licence application

Submit the required documents for the authority’s decision on issuing PPL(A).

Flexible theory, with regular guidance

The Cyprus EASA programme combines 100 hours of self-paced e-learning with 27 hours of revision and regular review. Three-hour Friday sessions can be attended in person or by video call. A mock-test result of at least 75% is needed before admission to the external exam.

There are nine subjects and nine theoretical exams. Flight lessons take place in person in Cyprus, while some theory work may continue alongside them.

  1. 01Air Law
  2. 02Aircraft General Knowledge
  3. 03Flight Performance and Planning

45 training hours: aircraft and simulator clearly separated

The published minimum is 40 actual hours in an aircraft plus five hours with an instructor on a certified FNPT II simulator. Aircraft training covers navigation, landings and emergency procedures.

Plan around your progress, not a guaranteed finish date

Theory takes at least three months. The flying phase typically takes around nine weeks, and parts of the two phases may overlap. Weather, your availability, aircraft scheduling, learning progress and school requirements affect the actual timetable.

Understand the course price and the wider budget

The €13,500 basic package is calculated on the minimum required hours. It is not the full minimum amount you should budget before licence issue.

about €14,500

About €14,500 is a minimum planning figure based on minimum hours, not a final quotation. Aircraft training is paid in advance before each flight. Additional aircraft hours are €250 per hour; the skill-test cost may change with actual flight time.

Not included in that estimate

  • Extra training hours beyond the minimum
  • Personal equipment
  • Travel to Cyprus and accommodation
  • Costs arising from individual training pace
  • Any change to the practical-test cost caused by actual flight time

Check these requirements early

From 16

Solo flights may be permitted once all programme requirements are met.

From 17

The licence may be issued from this age, subject to the authority’s requirements.

Class 2

A valid medical certificate is required before solo flying.

ICAO Level 4+

The programme states this minimum English-language level.

The school and relevant aviation authorities make the final eligibility determination. Completing the course does not guarantee a licence.

Looking at pilot training beyond Cyprus?

AG Flights can help you compare training options in other countries too. We start with your goal, desired licence, language, budget and timetable, then look at suitable schools and the rules of the relevant jurisdiction. The Cyprus programme and its prices do not automatically apply elsewhere.

PPL training questions

What is a PPL(A)?

It is a private pilot licence for aeroplanes. Training, examinations and the authority’s assessment are required before a licence may be issued; it is not a professional pilot qualification.

How many flight hours are required for a PPL in Cyprus?

This published EASA programme has a 45-hour minimum: 30 aircraft hours with an instructor, 10 solo aircraft hours and five instructor-led FNPT II hours. Additional hours may be necessary.

How much does PPL training in Cyprus cost?

The minimum-hours basic package is €13,500: €2,500 for enrolment and theory, €10,000 for 40 aircraft hours and €1,000 for five FNPT II hours.

Is the €13,500 price the final cost?

No. Medical, exam and initial licence fees bring the indicative minimum budget to about €14,500. Extra hours, equipment, travel and accommodation are not included. Reconfirm prices before payment.

How long does PPL training take?

Theory takes at least three months and flight training typically around nine weeks. They may partly overlap, but weather, scheduling, progress and school requirements affect the actual duration.

Do I need a Class 2 medical certificate?

Yes. A valid Class 2 medical certificate is required before solo flights in this programme.

What level of English is required?

The programme states ICAO English Level 4 or higher. The school and aviation authorities confirm your final eligibility.

Can I start training before I am 17?

The programme allows solo flying from age 16 after its requirements are met. The licence may be issued from age 17; check all entry conditions with the school.

Are accommodation and travel included?

No. Travel to Cyprus and accommodation, as well as personal equipment, are outside the stated minimum budget.

Can AG Flights help me find pilot training outside Cyprus?

Yes. We can help explore schools and programmes in other countries based on your goals, language, budget and applicable rules. The Cyprus price is not a quote for another country.
